Open Enrollment Period for Individuals Ended, but Group and Special Enrollment Periods continue year round

Open Enrollment Period Over, Group and Special Enrollment Continue

After numerous changes to the annual enrollment period for individuals, the open enrollment period has ended for most individuals. NY is giving some exceptions for those who have already registered and began BUT DID NOT FINISH an application on NY State of Health to do so by April 15th as noted in the official notice below:

 “Attention:
Open enrollment for 2014 ended on March 31st. If you have taken steps to apply for coverage before April 1st, the Marketplace will provide additional assistance to help you complete your enrollment by April 15th.
After April 15th, you can enroll in coverage if you qualify for a special enrollment period. Individuals eligible for Medicaid or Child Health Plus and American Indians can enroll at any time during the year. Enrollment in the Small Business Marketplace continues all year. Small business owners and employees must sign up by April 30th for coverage that begins June 1, 2014.”

Group business can continue to be written year round as has been the case in the past. Individuals LOSING coverage, and those life events such as marriage and birth of newborns will continue to be allowed to enroll in the individual market at any time, but you must be enrolled within 60 days of the ‘life event’.
